Malachi 3:10 KJV  “… if I will not open you the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”

Malachi 3:10 NASB “…if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.

The Old Testament ends with the book of Malachi in a remarkable fashion. In Genesis, sin caused God to open the windows of heaven and to pour out judgment on an antediluvian race (Gen 7:11). Perhaps three millennia have since rolled their course. It has chronicled a long history of human failure, particularly the failure which marked the nation of Israel. Yet now God promises to open those same “windows” and to pour out a blessing. Such is the character of God that the blessings are viewed as so abundant that there will not be room available to receive the wealth from His hand.

Though we are not told if Israel rose to the challenge, the history of the intertestamental period and the condition of the nation in Matthew 1 suggest otherwise. Spiritual poverty and national oppression greet us as we survey the condition of Israel in those early chapters of Matthew and Luke.

And yet, something remarkable does happen. The windows of heaven do open, and a blessing is sent. It was not overwhelming crops at harvest. Nor was it prominence among the nations. The blessing came in the form of a Person, a Saviour descended from heaven to earth, from the majesty to the manger. He came, He lived, and He went to a cross. The blessings which that one solitary life have reaped for us are beyond measure.

As the beloved apostle completes his Gospel account, he notes that so great was this one solitary life that if all were to be recorded, the world itself could not contain what could be written (John 21:25). The One Who descended from heaven lived a life whose consequences were such that there was not “room enough to receive it” all. Man’s failure did not deter or hinder the outpouring of God’s heart. He wanted, in Malachi’s day, to pour out a blessing. He may have waited 400 years, but the blessing that came when the windows of heaven were opened far exceeded any material blessing that might have come in Malachi’s day.

Earlier in Malachi 3, God reminded the nation that He does not change (v 6). He is a God determined to bless humanity. It has been His intention, residing in His heart, from eternity past. All the rebellion of the human heart, all the long litany of human failure, all the resistance and rejection which marked us – none of this could cancel His ultimate purpose.

"Tis His great delight to bless us, O how He loved!"

Heaven was opened, blessing was poured out, and there was not room enough to write all the books that could be written telling of the wonder of that life. It is not just that the Lord Jesus brought or purchased innumerable blessings for us. That He did. But He is the greatest blessing Himself! We could never have received anything greater. And wonder of wonders, even though the world could not find “room enough” to contain all that could be written, Paul wrote, “that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith” (Eph 3:17). The One Whom the heaven of heavens cannot contain, has through His Holy Spirit, taken up residence in your heart and mine if we make enough room for Him.
