Back in 1988, Bobby McFerrin wrote a song entitled: “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” It reached #1 on the Top 100 chart on Sept. 24th, 1988 and held that position for two weeks. Here’s a snippet of that popular song.

Here’s a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note
Don’t worry, be happy.
In every life we have some trouble
But when you worry you make it double
Don’t worry, be happy.
Don’t worry, be happy now.

Don’t worry, be happy.
Don’t worry, be happy.
Don’t worry, be happy.
Don’t worry, be happy.

That’s a portion of the lyrics of that big hit song. Even if I shared all the lyrics of that once popular song, you would still have reached the same conclusion – it’s really quite empty. Yes, the idea of not worrying and remaining happy is appealing – but Mr. McFerrin, what’s your recipe for happiness? How can a person be worry-free?

How blessed [how happy] are all who take refuge in Him! Psalm 2:12

He who heeds the word wisely will find good, And whoever trusts in the LORD, happy is he. Proverbs 16:20

Are you trusting in the Lord today? You trusted Him for salvation. You fled to Him for refuge when you understood how lost and helpless you were in your sins. Remember that time – the very first time you put your trust in Him? Could there ever be a bigger crisis looming on your horizon than the reality of facing conscious eternal punishment? Crises don’t get much bigger than that. What relief was yours when you found refuge in Christ! What happiness when you discovered His love. Who could describe the happiness and rest that flooded your soul when you put your trust in Him? Saved, settled and secure forever!

But just now you have another emergency in your life; another worry and another crisis. As big as this one is, could it be bigger than the threat of losing your soul? In the biggest crisis of your life – you put your trust in Him and it worked. You were blessed and made happy and the worries of not being right with God vanished.

Today a crisis (very real) but of a lesser sort is crossing your path. Are you able to trust Him this time as well? What do you think the outcome will be if you put your trust in Him and rely completely upon the Lord at this time?

The Psalmist said: “Happy are all they that put their trust in Him.” (Psalm 40:4)

Dear child of God – “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5. When we rely on ourselves, we’ll have plenty to worry about. When we trust in the Lord, we will experience blessing, peace and confidence even in the midst of the stressors and worries of life.

Casting all your care (anxious thoughts) upon Him; for He cares for you.”1Peter 5:7

“Bobby McFerrin, sorry but we’re switching to John H. Sammis’ song for happiness. With due respect, the lyrics are just a bit richer than your “Be Happy” song.  We’d prefer to have the lyrics of “Trust and Obey” replaying in our heads as we go about our routines today.”

When we walk with the Lord
In the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Refrain

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear,
Not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss,
Not a frown or a cross,
But is blest if we trust and obey.

But we never can prove
The delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favour He shows,
For the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

Then in fellowship sweet
We will sit at His feet.
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way.
What He says we will do,
Where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.

Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.

Warmly in Christ,

Peter Ramsay
