Who’s your God? Do you know the Lord who supplies your needs, quenches your thirst, satisfies your longings, silences your fears and stills your storms? I suspect you have already been talking to the Lord today about how thankful you are for everything He has done for you and is doing for you.
If you haven’t read Psalm 107 recently, would you try to fit it in today? It was relevant to the children of Israel in the distant past and real to believers over the centuries. The character of God appreciated in this Psalm is still relevant to every child of God this very day.
God is sufficient for every contingency and emergency in our lives. God is not an aloof God who reluctantly and grudgingly and skimpily dispenses good to those who beg and plead and moan and groan to get His attention. We don’t have to pound drums or dance around a fire with chants to wake Him up. He’s wide awake, fully conscious and cognizant. His beneficence (goodness) surpasses human comprehension.
Despite our repeated failures and gross negligence and wilfulness – He is there for us when we call in our desperation. Like His ancient people, often our almost cyclic predicaments are the result of our own independent streaks and waywardness. Self-inflicted pain. Yet, He will always respond lovingly and graciously in ways that ultimately draw us closer to Himself. He is never mean-spirited, vindictive or harsh in His discipline and correction.
He is generous – not stingy. He loves – not likes. He gives – not sells. He is compassionate and caring – not curious and marginally interested. He’s sincere – not fake or put-on!
Can you relate to this?
For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good. Psalms 107:9
Four times over in this Psalm these words appear: “Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses.” Four times over in this one Psalm this verse appears: “Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men!”
I’m not a meteorologist; nor am I an avid storm watcher or fanatical storm chaser. Admittedly, I know practically nothing about hurricanes. But isn’t there something about the ‘eye’ of the hurricane? Once you break through the eyewall – the most violent part of the hurricane, you enter the ‘eye’ where all is calm, even though the storm rages all around.
He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed. Psalms 107:29
When the Lord came to earth, He physically turned the wild and violent Sea of Galilee into placid and calm waters. Many Christians who have been through violent storms and have felt the battering and the pounding of life’s waves have testified that in the eye of the hurricane, in the depths of their soul there was a certain calm that could never be manufactured by sheer human willpower and stoical behaviour. They had a fresh appreciation that the Good, the Beneficent God was in control.
We can close with the opening line of this Psalm:
Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. Psalms 107:1
Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.
Warmly in Christ,
Peter Ramsay
