Have you ever heard anyone ask: “Does God care about the nitty-gritty details of my life?”

God cares about the nitty-gritty details of my life far more than I could ever imagine and much more than I care myself. If He knows the number of hairs per square centimetre on your scalp and the number of tears you have wiped off your cheeks – then you can be sure He is following your life with great interest.

Before Moses died, he wrote a long poem that most scholars believe is one of the noblest and loftiest pieces of poetry in the Bible. You can read it in Deuteronomy 32.  There are hundreds of detailed instructions in the earlier chapters of Deuteronomy for God’s people: how to keep their hearts solely for the Lord; how to stay clean physically and free from immorality. There are many instructions on being separate from the world around them, refusing to worship idols and showing kindness to the disadvantaged.

But by Deuteronomy 32, old Moses is winding down. Among his last words, just after penning the great poem, were these:

“Take to heart all the words … that you may command them to your children, that they may be careful to do all the words of this law. For it is no empty word for you, but your very life, and by this word you shall live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.” Deuteronomy 32:46-47

In other words, “This is not shallow or empty advice I am giving you. If you want to live life to the fullest, if you want to enjoy an abundant life, if you want to live the best possible life the Lord has in store for you, then love the Lord your God with all your heart and mind; and honour and obey His Word.”

In Deuteronomy 30, Moses reminded the people of God of two options in life. You can either (1) disobey the Lord, do your own thing and suffer the consequences and loss; or (2) you can put the Lord first in your life and enjoy the blessings that accompany obedience.

With the two options on the table, Moses then pleads with the people:

“Choose life…loving the LORD your God, obeying His voice and holding fast to Him, for He is your life…” Deuteronomy 30:19-20

Of course, in 2021, we know we are under Grace – not the Law. But do you think the principle for living your Christian life is any different? The abundant life is experienced by giving God His rightful place in our lives. Moses’ words are relevant to your life and mine.

The Lord Jesus said thieves come to steal, kill and destroy – physically and spiritually. Then He said:  “But I am come that you might have life and that you might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10.  Dear child of God, are you experiencing the abundant life?  Moses said: “He is your life.” The Apostle Paul in Philippians 1 wrote: “For me to live is Christ.” Also, “When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall you also appear with Him in glory.” Colossians 3:4

Mark Zuckerburg. Is FaceBook his life? Tiger Woods – Golfing? Sydney Crosby- Hockey? Will someone say about you: “Her? Christ was her life.” Or to you: “That guy? I think God was the priority in his life.”

Are you in the process of choosing something other than the abundant life? Don’t. Make pleasing and honouring Christ your chief purpose in life. Then you will know what Jesus meant when He called it an ‘abundant life.’

Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.

Warmly in Christ,

Peter Ramsay
