Have you ever been to an air show? Thousands of people are in danger of stiff necks. If you were driving by all the people with your windows rolled up and your music on, you might wonder what the big attraction was. No one notices the earwigs, spiders and ants crawling on the ground or riding on the straps of their Birkenstocks. Everybody is looking up. Everyone’s neck muscles are being strained; heads are tilted backwards, and all eyes are glued to the skies. Even their cameras have the upward tilt. The big attraction seems to be above – not below.
Unless we’re on the flat of our backs, we tend to only look up when we think something is happening or about to happen up there – a flash of lightning, a downpour of rain, an eclipse, a ‘shooting star,’ a fireworks display or an air show.
The Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Colossae about the Deity and absolute superiority and supremacy of Christ. He was ‘nipping in the bud’ false doctrine that was looking for a foothold in the local church there. He reminds them that they belong to the Body of Christ, but their Head is in Heaven. (Col.1:18, 2:19) Members of the body down here – but the Head of the Body is up there. The Head is the Resurrected and Ascended Christ! He’s up there! Christ, who is our life, is above.
Earlier, Paul taught them that their water baptism symbolized that they died with Christ; they were buried with Him and were also risen with Him to walk in the newness of life. And now he writes:
Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. Colossians 3:1-4
Which way is your head tilted? Pulled forward and down or bent backwards and up? Are you looking at passing earwigs and spiders, or are you occupied with what’s important above? Are my primary interests located in Heaven, or am I preoccupied with the interests of earth?
What claims the affections of my heart? Are my heartstrings being strummed from above, or is the world making the music in my heart? The great ideas that captivate my mind from morning until sunset – are they related to what’s above, or can they be classified as ‘things on the earth?’ Are my goals and aspirations horizontal on the flat or vertical on the above?
If someone was driving by your life with their windows rolled up and their music on, would they get the sense that you must see something up there that they are missing? Wouldn’t it be awesome if they asked you about what’s going on above that seems to be of such interest to you! Then you could tell them about your Saviour and Lord – the Living Christ. Be sure to mention that this One who is your life and for whom you are living, will appear in the future, and your life, which is now hidden in Him, will be on public display when He appears in glory.
That’s why the temporal things (like careers and money) are, for you, only secondary. They are merely a means to your end – which is eternal glory.
Figuratively, keep your head tilted up today. Make sure the compass of your heart is pointing to Heaven’s North. That’s where Christ is. ABOVE! By the way, the term ‘stiffnecked Christian’ probably isn’t the greatest title to headline the teaching above.
Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.
Warmly in Christ,
Peter Ramsay
