In Luke 11:27, a woman can keep quiet no longer as she is wowed by the Christ. She shouts out: “Blessed is the womb that bare thee and the paps which thou hast sucked.” As she listened to Him, she could only think: “Your mother must be the happiest woman on earth. There could be no higher honor or achievement in life than to be the vessel that brought You in to this world. What a fortunate woman Your mother is!” Jesus didn’t rebuke her, for Mary really was a chosen vessel. There could only be one Mary.
But what He said next was powerful: “Yea, but rather, blessed are they that hear the Word of God, and keep it.” “Dear woman, you never had the privilege of bringing Me into the world. There could only be one such happy woman with that honor. But whether it is you or my mother Mary, the greater blessing comes not from being the mother of the Lord but from being a ‘follower’ of the Lord. Higher blessing is available not to one lady (Mary) but to every woman and man on the planet who listens to the Word of God and does it! Being My mother is out of reach for you – but hearing and doing My Word is definitely within your reach. You will find true blessing if you listen and submit to My Word.” Reading between the lines, I think that’s what He is trying to tell this awe-struck woman.
Isn’t that encouraging! The Lord places a far greater value on simple obedience and submission to His Word than on any other thing I could possibly do for Him. It is more important to Him than the famous title Mother of Jesus.
“Lord, give me a fresh desire today to hear Your Word and do it.”
