Where in the entire Word of God do we find a “sinners prayer” ? and why do you think it adds to Scripture? My wife was raised in a church where they used it all the time and she was stumbled by it as were many others.
The Scripture simply says “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved”!
Nothing else. No prayer will save and we are not told to lead sinners in prayer for salvation. We are told to “preach the gospel” – nothing else
The Spirit of God does the convicting and Christ does the saving
Certainly the Lord Jesus Himself told the story of a sinner’s prayer in a temple in Luke 18:13 “God be merciful to me a sinner.” That’s one good example of a sinner calling out to God. Romans 10:13 does say that whoever calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved. The principle in the Bible is God hears the cries of a broken and contrite person. Having said that, the mere repetition of a prayer saves not a single person. Tragically, asking a sinner to repeat a prayer to be saved has led to countless stories of people who think they received salvation at the end of the prayer- but remained in their sins. Such an approach is a tragedy. Having said that, we must acknowledge that many others who have honestly cried out to God for salvation through such a prayer have been wonderfully saved. Many old Gospel Hymns contain the equivalent of such prayers. The chorus of a well known Gospel Hymn goes like this (and the Gospel preacher is praying that someone in the audience will make these words honestly personal): “I come. I come. I come to Thee my God, I do Thy love believe. I do accept Thy gift of life and peace – I do Thy Son receive.” The Lord knows each heart and He does business with honest sinners who cry out to Him for salvation.
