Jesus Notices it when You Don’t

With 6,692,030,277 alive on the planet, do you think the Lord Jesus would notice or even care if you (little old you, insignificant and unnoticed) missed thanking Him today for your blessings? If you missed thanking Him today for saving you from your sins and from a life of darkness and emptiness – do you think He would notice?

We notice it when people fail to say hello to us or to give us a friendly smile or a farewell hand-salute-wave. But that’s us! Would the Lord Omnipotent and Almighty, the Creator and Sustainer of all things – would He notice it if one of His 6.692 billion creatures failed to show appreciation or neglected to say thanks?

It was a special occasion. A religious Pharisee invited Jesus to his house for a meal. A woman with a not-so-good reputation heard about the special guest inside and decided to enter. This woman’s life had recently been touched by Jesus and she stepped inside to seize her moment to express her appreciation and adoration of Christ. She was sobbing. The river of tears provided the water she needed to wash His feet. She kissed the very feet that walked in her direction and met her in her need. She used her hair as a towel and then she anointed His feet with the special ointment.

The host for the meal was disgusted. “What kind of a man is this Jesus who would allow such a sinner to pour out her appreciation as His feet! If He was a prophet, He would know that this person was a low-lifer and He would have nothing to do with her. This proves my case. Jesus is no prophet of any sort!”

You know the rest of the story. Jesus gave the religious do-gooder a lesson on gratitude and thankfulness. Those who are most aware of their sin appreciate most the forgiveness of their sins. Those who have been forgiven the most love the most.

Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon,

“Do you see this woman? I entered your house;

you gave me no water for my feet,

but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

You gave me no kiss,

but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet.

You did not anoint my head with oil,

but she has anointed my feet with ointment.

(Luke 7:44-46)

Jesus noticed such details. “He invited me in but he didn’t even perform the basic act of eastern hospitality. Not only did he not wash my feet, he didn’t even provide a basin of water. He extended no kiss of welcome to Me. He never even used the ordinary oil on My head while she used the costly ointment on My feet.”

The Lord Jesus still notices such details today. Jesus notices it when I don’t give Him what He deserves. Have you been neglecting to give Him something in your life? Have you failed in some way to show Him just how much He means to you and how thankful you are for the forgiveness of your sins?

Try writing a short paragraph just now that expresses your appreciation and love for Christ. Incorporate it into a prayer today.

Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.
