Some toss and turn on their beds. But often it’s not insomnia – it’s fear. Some are in constant need of massages to relax the muscles in their shoulders and their neck – overly tense about something. Anxious, fretting, worried and wondering if God is going to let things spin out of control in their lives. Maybe you are right there today. No matter how much faith you try to muster up inside and no matter how many times you pray and confess your sins, you just don’t have the confidence that God has everything under control.
The prophet Isaiah gave very encouraging words to God’s people in his day. Often our minds spin out of control as our imaginations run wild and we imagine the very worst. Molehills grow into mountains. For Isaiah, he wondered why God’s people should be afraid of the nations around them. The enemy nations had only mere idols for their gods.
In a mad scramble, these idol worshipping people scurried around to build some idols to protect themselves. They got the metals together. The carpenter said to the goldsmith: “Great work! Speed it up! The metal looks great!!” The craftsman who shaped the metal encouraged the tradesman working at the anvil. With speed they worked together. The idol was ready to be erected. Then guess what? To make the idol sturdy and to keep it standing they fastened it with nails!! That’s all the people who did NOT know God had to alleviate their fears. You can read about this process in Isaiah 41:6-7.
Then Isaiah passes on this message from the Lord Himself.
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
(Isaiah 41:10)
What a contrast to the flimsy idol made with human hands fastened with nails to keep it standing! When the unsaved are nervous or afraid, they don’t have much, do they?!! We on the other hand can read these reassuring words, no less relevant to us today then it was when they were written. Our God does not need to be propped up or fastened with nails. There is no weakness with Him. He is the Almighty God. Don’t be afraid dear child of God. Look to Him alone. Don’t look inside yourself or to human reasoning. Get your eyes on your God. Remember that you have a personal relationship with Him. He is holding you up and steadying you with His own righteous right hand. An always right right hand – and that’s not a typo.
If you are flooded with doubts today and filled with fear, sneak away into a quiet corner. Get on your knees and open your Bible and let the Lord speak to your heart. A little time alone with Him, alters our perspective dramatically.
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee.” (or whose mind STOPS at Thee.) Isaiah 26:3
“…he that cometh to God must believe that He IS, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6
