Sometimes it is called ‘herd instinct’, ‘pact mentality’, or ‘groupthink’. Have you ever jumped on the bandwagon?
The parade is going by. One particular float holds you spellbound. The music is blasting out from the ‘bandwagon’ and the musicians are very much alive. You’ve been impatiently waiting for something more exciting than horses, clowns, and non-playing marching bands. Now here it is. Rather than running alongside the bandwagon as it moves on down the street, you hop on. There you sit on the side of the flatbed with your hands underneath your thighs, swinging your legs to the music as you are being carried down the street. That’s called ‘jumping on the bandwagon.’
Just because others are traveling in a certain direction, don’t necessarily follow them. Just because your friends are doing questionable things – don’t you jump on the bandwagon and go along with them. The Word of God says:
“Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil.” Exodus 23:2.
Obviously the easiest thing to do in the short-term is to go along with the crowd. But rarely is the crowd right. The majority cried: “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” If you had been a resident of Jerusalem back then, would you have jumped on that bandwagon?
Maybe your struggle is not the bandwagon or the mob mentality. You find it hard to say “No!” to your inner circle of friends. Pressure from your friends. You feel you have to go along with them if you are ever going to fit in. Or, maybe you can relate to the term: ‘groupthink’. Each one tries to conform his or her opinions to what they think the rest of the group is probably thinking. However, this results in a situation in which the group ultimately agrees upon an action that each member might individually consider to be unwise.
When it comes to right and wrong or behaviours and activities that are questionable, discipline yourself to always ask: “what would the Lord want me to say?” or “what would the Lord want me to do?”
How many times did Jesus say to those He met: “Follow Me?” He wants me to follow Him today. I should only follow others to the extent that they are following Christ. It would be a good activity this week if we all memorized five verses about following:
“Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace and things wherewith one may edify another.”
“See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good both among yourselves and to all men.”
“But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.”
“But flee also youthful lusts; but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”
“Beloved, follow not that which is evil but that which is good.”
