His Name was much set by.” 1 Samuel 18:30 KJV
His name was highly esteemed.” 1Samuel 18:30 NASB

David is a fitting picture of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is to be noted that there is only one “David” in all the Scriptures. He also has the unique place of being the first and last name mentioned in the New Testament apart from our Lord Jesus.
In 1 Samuel 18, three statements resonate and echo something of the worth of the Lord Jesus Christ.
In verse 5, we read that “he was accepted in the sight of all the people.” In verse 16, “all Israel and Judah loved David.” And finally, in verse 30, his name was “much set by” or very precious (Newberry).
Thus, we are reminded of the world’s hatred for our Lord Jesus and what should mark each of us as believers – an increasing love for His person.
What is most significant is the increasing affection for David as we move through the chapter. This is made starker by the intensifying animosity of Saul toward David. As the people’s love for David grew, hatred grew in the heart of Saul. All that the nation admired in David was the basis for Saul’s negative reaction. So great was Saul’s hatred that we read of his varied attempts to put David to death. Once again, there is a contrast, as seen in Jonathan, of whom we read, that “he loved him (David) as his own soul” (vv 1, 3).
Coupled with this are the statements concerning David’s movements. We read that David “behaved himself wisely” (v 5), and, that “David behaved himself wisely in all his ways” (v 14), and again, that “David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul” (v 30).
We are reminded that all the traits and virtues that we now find beautiful in our Savior are the very same things which drew forth the hatred of men. Our eyes have been opened by the Spirit of God to behold the “glories which eternal years shall never all unfold.”

Consider verses 1-3 and look for the elements of true discipleship as seen in Jonathan’s actions.
