Am I a person the Lord can trust? Being a faithful Christian is a choice one makes. Have you ever consciously chosen to be faithful to God and to the things that are important to Him? Have I kept my word – or am I straying in other paths by making choices that please myself but not necessarily God?

Choices are critical. The character of my life is reflected in the choices I make. The story of our life is a collection of choices and outcomes. That seemingly harmless choice you made recently was not an isolated or stand-alone choice. It, along with other choices made on a daily basis, are the threads that are being woven into the tapestry of your life. Choices not only reflect my values as a person, they also influence the very trajectory of my life.

The Psalmist said:

I have chosen to be faithful; I have determined to live by Your regulations. Psalms 119:30

Another translation says: “I have chosen the way of faithfulness.” To live by the truth and being a faithful Christian doesn’t just happen. A choice is a conscious decision. The Bible character Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not disappoint the Lord in Babylon. How long has it been since I last bowed my head and heart and made a conscious decision or renewed an earlier commitment to the Lord to be a ‘faithful’ Christian?

Other Christians make choices – but their choice may be just to drift along, choosing not to lock themselves into a vow-like choice to be faithful. They may choose to spend their money and fill their evenings and weekends with their favourite hobbies and pleasures or even work. They may choose to do the bare minimum to maintain their name in the local fellowship’s annual Contact Directory. They may show up once or twice a month if they aren’t too busy and possibly get to the baby showers throughout the year. But before the Lord, we must look after our own lives while we pray for others -rather than judge them.

There are tragic examples in the Word of God of extremely poor choices individuals made. It was a tragic choice that Lot made when he chose the well-watered plains of Jordan (Genesis 13) and pitched his tent towards Sodom. The green fields looked so promising, and the nearby city looked like a good possibility – but what a disaster for Lot and his family!

Maybe you are weighing things up as you prepare to make a choice. Is faithfulness to the Lord the single greatest determining factor as you make a decision about a job, a partner, a move or a financial commitment? Are you allowing the Lord to lead you and speak to you through His Word? If you are plagued by persistent feelings that your choice is probably wrong, don’t ignore the inner whisperings of your heart. Don’t bulldoze ahead regardless. Apply the brakes and back-up. Think of your love and devotion to Christ.

Don’t forget the awesomeness of a clear conscience at the end of the day.

Lord, I have chosen to be faithful. Your principles and regulations are important to me. Thanks for the strength You gave me today to make choices that are pleasing to You. Help me tomorrow. Thanks for Your love. Good night Lord.”

Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.

Warmly in Christ,
