Have you ever thought about one word or a single phrase for an entire day, mulling it over in your mind, looking at it from different perspectives and defining it in different ways? Words or phrases like atonement, precious blood, eternal life, God of all comfort, etc.?
When the Apostle Paul wrote to his younger Christian helper Titus, he carefully selected a word he personally used only once in all his writings – apseudes. In fact, it is the only time anyone used it in the entire New Testament. If you saw that word in a text or post, would you keep mulling it over in your mind? Would it be enough to keep you pumped for the day?
Perhaps it is a slight exaggeration, but really, when Titus read that expression apseudes, it probably gave him his thrill for the day. He was a younger man working for the Lord on the island of Crete in the Mediterranean. Before the good news of Jesus Christ reached this island, it seems many of the people had earned a nasty reputation. Like other sinners, these people slipped into the practice of lying – to the extent that it had become an accepted part of their culture – their norm. Sadly, in the Mediterranean region, some disparagingly called them liars.
Against this backdrop, Titus opens the cherished letter from Paul, and he reads: “…ho apseudes Theos.”
Can’t you almost see Titus, with enthusiasm, slicing the air with his fist and joyfully shouting: “Yes! Yes! Apseudes! Apseudes! ho apseudes Theos!” Did he drop to his knees and thank the Lord for such a powerful thought for the day? That one word was probably enough to keep Titus going straight through until midnight!
Just a second. Are you not experiencing the same thrill that Titus did? Maybe it’s a language barrier. Here it is in English – “the non-lying God.”
I can lie. Titus could too, and so could the Cretans. But God cannot lie. I can deceive. God cannot deceive. I can falsify something. God cannot. I can exaggerate. God cannot. God is 100% truthful and dependable 100% of the time. Paul writes to Titus, and he says:
“….eternal life, which the non-lying God, promised before the world began…” Titus 1:2.
Maybe you are going through a rough time. Perhaps you are filled with doubts, wondering if you can trust God or not. Remember: “ho apseudes Theos.” My eternal security is not based on my consistency as a Christian, nor my ability to remember clearly. My security is based on the assurance from the non-lying God. I have God’s Word for it. (e.g. John 5:24, John 10:28)
But God is not only truthful when it comes to the promise of eternal life. Dear child of God, He is the non-lying God for every promise He has ever given you from His Holy Word.
God is Truth. God loves the truth. God hates untruths, lies and exaggerations. Jesus was unequivocal about the origin of lies, exaggerations and untruths.
“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:44 NASB
“Lord, help me to tell the truth today. Please help me not to mislead, lie or exaggerate. I am so privileged that I have an eternal relationship with Thee, ho apseudes Theos. Thanks, Father.”
Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today,
Warmly in Christ
