You may have lived long enough to relate to the title of this Bible Bite –  Rock Solid Reliability 100% of the Time. You know what it is to receive shattering news that shakes one to the core. The phone call you never wanted to receive. The knock on the door you never thought would happen at your home. The news that ‘floored’ you or the message that sent you reeling.

In these dark happenings of life, a Christian may ask: “Is there anything secure? Anything real, reliable and rock solid? Is there anything or anyone worthy of my trust? In whom can I place my confidence?”

For some, it has been a call from a doctor. Perhaps yours was a letter from your employer. Maybe it was through another shaken Christian you received the news. For others, it was a call from the police. Perhaps it was within the family – shattering news from a son or daughter or your spouse. For others, it was news from an elder of a local church. The list of possibilities is endless.

One way or another – life has its shocking news. Ever since the Fall of Adam, beautiful and hopeful and promising sunrises have given way to dark heavy clouds at mid-day followed by a sunset obscured by the continuing storm.

Secure jobs sometimes let you down. A united family can be fractured by selfishness. Someone you greatly respect can bitterly disappoint you. A healthy assembly of believers can become desperately sick. A trusted friend can break your confidence. Someone who has helped you can eventually hinder or hurt you.

God’s people in the Old Testament and Christians in the New Testament, and every generation since have had to learn that there is only One who will never fail or faint or fall. There is only One in whom you can be 100% confident 100% of the time.

Read King David’s own words out loud to yourself just now. Here they are in Psalm 62:

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah Psalm 62:5-8

King David knew this experientially so well! His siblings, who once probably idolized their little brother, ended up mocking his confidence in God during Goliath’s time. The secure relationship he seemed to have earned with Saul flipped to one of total mistrust. His son Absalom, whom he appeared to favour highly, turned on him and became a determined foe and arch-rival. One of David’s trusted advisors, Ahithophel, betrayed his trust and joined Absalom’s league in revolt.

Who could David trust? None of the above – for all let him down. But even closer to home – David tragically learned he could not even trust himself. Have you learned that lesson? Have I? David, of whom is recorded he was a man ‘after God’s own heart’ – was after all, just a man! Despite his victories in the past and the exploits for God that marked his path, when we are reading his story, we slam head-on into that tragically disappointing verse in 2Samuel 11:2 “It happened, late one afternoon.” And our hearts sink.

So again, who could David trust? There was only One whose brand and reputation was and is and will ever be – Rock Solid Reliability 100% of the Time

“HE [The Lord] only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.” Psalm 62:5

Dear child of God – perhaps today is one of those days. So slip away into your private space and focus on the secure Rock and the solid Foundation of your faithful Christ – the unchanging and Faithful One who is the same yesterday, today and forever.

When it comes to anyone else we may trust, we can say – “the same yesterday.” We may even be able to say: “the same today.” But for no one other than Jesus Christ can we add – “the same forever.” Hebrews 13:8

Praise God – His reliability is 100% Rock Solid 100% of the time. He is our Rock.
