Until the day dawns and the morning star arises.” 2Peter 1:19 NASB

There are many titles used to express something of the beauty and of the many offices of the Lord Jesus. The verses cited above encircle truth that is precious to every believer. In these three titles – the Dayspring, the Daysman, and the Daystar – there is a wealth of truth for our meditation

The Dayspring – His Incarnation and Life

Zacharias sang a song of pure ecstasy at the birth of his son, John. But he was not singing of John, primarily. His song was of the One to whom John would bear witness: “For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare His way.” And then Zacharias introduced this delightful title of the Lord Jesus, the Dayspring. As such the Lord Jesus was the dawning of light, a light so brilliant and clear that it eclipsed the light of creation in its revelation, and the light of the commandments in its grace.

Decades ago, we all marvelled when men touched down on the moon. But a far greater marvel, one of grace, is when the Son of God visited, “touched down,” on planet earth. He came from on high to visit His people to give light to those sitting in darkness, life to those in the shadow of death, and to give liberty and guide our feet into the way of peace.

The Daysman – His Death and Enthronement

Job longed for someone to be able to mediate his case with God. He longed for a daysman, a mediator suitable to his condition and to God’s holy character. Job would have thrilled at the words of the apostle Paul: “There is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus (1 Tim 2:5).

He was a mediator on the cross, meeting our need as sinners and satisfying the throne of God. But it is in His place at God’s right hand that He continues to “mediate” our condition as our Great High Priest.

The Daystar – His Coming and Reign

Peter was writing to believers who were enduring persecution for the name of Christ. He presented the coming Kingdom as the compensation for all the suffering and loss experienced for Christ. Peter, the only apostle who had the word of Christ that he would die (John 21), was not looking for the rapture but for the coming kingdom. He directed his readers to that kingdom and spoke of the dawning day and the Daystar which heralded the coming of that morning. David wrote of it as well and described it as a “morning without clouds” (2Sam 23:4). His full quotation aligns beautifully with Peter’s expression when he wrote, “He shall be as the light of the morning when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds” (2 Samuel 23:4).

When that Daystar arises telling of the day about to burst upon our world, it foretells a day when all the brokenness of our creation, all the tears and sobs, all inequities and evil will be done away and the One Who came as the Dayspring from on High and Who was the Mediator for us will then shed the light of His truth over our globe. Like the healing rays of the sun, He will “heal the brokenhearted” and make straight all that was made crooked by Adam’s sin. Well can we sing with J. G. Deck,

“We long O Lord to see,
Creation all, below above,
Redeemed and blessed by Thee.”
