It’s not hard to grasp that unexpected and challenging circumstances often disrupt our lives. We’re frequently caught off guard by devastating events. Some people mitigate potential losses by purchasing insurance coverage, and most, if not all, take preventive measures to protect themselves.

Murray Frank, the owner of Building It Right, faced a unique challenge: designing and constructing a mountain chalet that could withstand a destructive forest fire. With the increasing prevalence of wildfires, he embarked on creating an energy-efficient Net-Zero, fire-resistant model chalet.

Three Minute Video of Murray Frank describing his dream model cabin.

As the fire-resistant cabin neared completion, Frank ensured it complied with the latest and strictest national fire-resilient building codes and provincial fire-smart standards. He also engaged a professional forester to reduce combustible materials and other potential fuel sources on his property that could feed a raging forest fire on his land.

Just a month away from completing his fire-proof chalet, a raging wildfire swept through the Crater Creek area near Kelowna, BC. Frank’s dream of a family legacy cabin turned into a pile of ashes and scorched trees on his property. Despite his efforts since 2020, the cabin, known as the Ashnola Net Zero Demonstration Project, sadly became a scorched earth property.

Naturally, Murray Frank was disheartened. He had thought he was prepared for the worst, but even his ingenuity and efforts couldn’t withstand the ferocity of an out-of-control forest fire.

Wildfires, floods, and other extreme weather events are expected to increase globally. Wise individuals consider such possibilities in their future plans, but the question remains: can any preparation fully eliminate or mitigate the worst that could happen?

Are you ready for the worst that could occur?

Among all the potential storms, catastrophes, and tragedies, nothing is more profound and final than death. Yet, the Bible suggests that it is possible to be fully prepared for death. There’s no reason for your death to be an eternal disaster. The Bible implores readers to prepare to meet God.

Prepare to meet your God! Amos 4:12

False Sense of Security

Did Mr. Frank believe he was “safer” than others due to his adherence to stringent fire codes? In a relative sense, he was, but ultimately, all his prudent efforts were in vain. He lost everything.

This analogy can only stretch so far in making a spiritual point. The Bible is clear about the false sense of security that human efforts provide in trying to establish a positive relationship with God. Good works, virtuous living, and religious devotion do not ensure spiritual safety.

…How can we be saved if we remain in our sins? All of us have become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like a polluted garment; all of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities carry us away like the wind. Isaiah 64:5-6

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23

Every safety measure we try to implement may ease our conscience and make us feel safer about what happens “after death,” but all self-efforts only offer a false sense of security before God.

Being more charitable, reducing vices, strengthening family bonds, adhering more faithfully to religion, and other positive efforts can make us more respectable individuals. However, all of them combined cannot compensate for our sole point of vulnerability with God.

For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift— not from works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

Only Point of Vulnerability

Sin is the only barrier between us and God. Sin is the only thing God has against anyone. Sin is the sole reason anyone would be excluded from Heaven. As devastating as a cancer diagnosis may be, such diseases, at their worst, only lead to the grave. But sin will condemn a person to Hell.

Sin isn’t limited to our actions; it extends to our thoughts. Our problem isn’t just past sins but the potential for future transgressions. The problem of sin is not just what we do but who we are by nature – sinners.

Your iniquities are separating you from your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you… Isaiah 59:2

How to Prepare for the Worst

Considering the above, how can anyone prepare? Aren’t we all vulnerable and powerless before God? Yes, but the Bible’s grand narrative climaxes with good news for helpless sinners. Follow the logic and sequence of these five verses:

For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

This saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” 1 Timothy 1:15

For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God. 1 Peter 3:18

For while we were still helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. Romans 5:6

The one who believes in the Son [Jesus Christ] has eternal life, but the one who rejects the Son will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him. John 3:36

Only Christ Removes Your Vulnerability

Thanks to what Jesus Christ accomplished on the cross through His death, burial, and resurrection, God offers a remarkable deliverance from sin, the gift of eternal life, a fire-proof salvation that withstands all trials, and a guaranteed home in Heaven. For those who are prepared to meet God, death is simply a transition from time into a glorious eternity. Conversely, for those who die unprepared, the outcome is different.
