Some people are passionate about ornithology, dedicating every spare moment to birds—studying their beaks, wing contours, distinctive colour patterns, songs, migratory routes, and nesting habits. They subscribe to online alerts, devour new posts and videos about birds, and have bird magazines scattered across their coffee tables. Others are equally engrossed in sports, knowing their teams and stats as intimately as their own children. For some, it’s politicology. They are well-versed, passionate, and could easily host a talk show as political aficionados.

What ‘ology’ captures your heart and mind? What holds a magnetic pull over your life? Have you considered Christology—the study of the Person of our Lord Jesus Christ?

Among your friends, you might be the go-to expert on golf, trucks, astronomy, football, or politics. But the critical question is—how well do you know Christ? How well do I know Christ? Let’s ask ourselves: how much more can I share about Him this year compared to last? Could I speak for an hour, offering fresh insights and new glimpses of Christ from the past year, or would I be recycling old material?

Paul wrote to Christians in Colossae, a city he had never visited (Colossians 2:1) but whose faith was under threat from intellectuals and philosophers trying to erode their confidence in Christ. The Epistle to the Colossians is Paul’s beautiful and robust defence, presenting the deity, glories, and matchless worth of our Risen Christ, who is our Head as we serve Him on earth.

Paul then writes:
“…Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Colossians 2:2-3 NASB)

Are you continuing to explore the expansive …. the rich treasures found in Christ, or have you plateaued with a basic understanding of Him as merely your Saviour? There are treasures in Christ that surpass anything known to humanity.

How much time did I spend this week searching for those treasures? Imagine a diamond ring lost in a park. Some people casually kick away leaves, scanning the surface. Others stoop down, pushing leaves aside with their hands. Some even get on their knees, looking through blades of grass. But one determined person rents a metal detector and methodically sweeps the ground until they hear a beep. “Found it!”

In this analogy, which approach represents your effort in uncovering the treasures of wisdom and knowledge found in Christ alone? The word “treasure” shares roots with “thesaurus,” meaning storehouse. Christ is your thesaurus for life.

Today, start a new file or grab a hard-covered notebook and label it: “Treasures I’ve Found in Christ.” As you read your Bible and pray each day, make it a habit to record at least one sentence specifically about the Person of Christ. It could be something from the chapter you read, a phrase in a verse, a thought that came to you during prayer, or even an insight from someone else that resonated with you. Discipline yourself to write it down, keeping a running record of the Christ-centered nuggets that touch your heart.

If you need help stimulating your thoughts about the beauty of Christ, ask a mature Christian about their approach to digging, mining, and uncovering the golden nuggets of His character. If you’re not already a subscriber to Dr. A.J. Higgins’ Monday Meditations available only on this website, sign up for free now. Once a week, he shares a brief but profound, heart-warming post about some beautiful aspect of the Person of Christ.

As you document your thoughts on Christ, review them periodically, praying that your knowledge and intimacy with Him will steadily grow. The more we enjoy Christ, the richer our spiritual lives will be, and the more fruitful our lives will be for God’s glory and the blessing of others.
