My heart is inditing a good matter. I speak of the things which I have made touching the King.  Psalm 45:1 KJV

My heart overflows with a good theme; I address my verses to the King. Psalms 45:1 NASB

A Meditation that Is Precious

Psalm 45 is one of the several Messianic Psalms provided for our enjoyment and meditation. As the writer considers his theme, the King in His glory and beauty, he recognizes that it is a “good matter” or a “pleasing theme” (NIV), “good theme” (NASB). Here is a theme really worthy of his consideration. God has endowed us with minds, but we are responsible to seek out what is worthy of their attention. Here is a theme that is exhaustless.

Worship that Is Personal

Note that he speaks of “things which I have made” concerning the King. We can glean many helpful and precious thoughts from books, short articles such as this, and the ministry of others; but there is something very special in finding something fresh about the Lord Jesus in our own reading of the Scriptures. It is similar to the secrets shared between a husband and wife, special knowledge of each other which endears them together.

This will mean going to the Scriptures and looking for Christ. He should not be hard to find. If we go to the prophetic Scriptures, He is there: “The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (Rev 19:10). To bring something fresh to God concerning His Son, whether in your personal worship or when gathered with the believers, is a practice to be highly coveted.

A Record that Is Permanent

His tongue was likened to the pen of a ready scribe. He is a penman making an orderly inventory of the beauty, glory, and majesty of the King. How lovely when a brother rises in worship and can present an orderly review of the glories of the Lord Jesus Christ! How wonderful when we can trace in every step of His life, from His incarnation up to the throne the beauty of His steps.

Do you think that the Father will ever forget the fragrance of worship offered from earth, the very place where His Son was rejected? What a weight it adds to our worship to think that it not only brings delight to the Father’s heart now but will be remembered by the Godhead eternally!

A Theme that Is Preeminent

Here is One Who is Matchless in His Greatness. He is “fairer far” than the children of men. He stands out distinct and unique, the Chiefest or most conspicuous among ten thousand. He is incomparable and inexhaustible.

He is Boundless in His Grace. “Grace is poured into Thy lips.” They recognized the gracious words which came from those lips. They marvelled at His answers, which seemed so obvious and kind, so conclusive and debate-ending. Yet they were always full of “grace and truth.”

He is Measureless in His Glory. God has highly exalted Him! “God hath blessed Thee forever.” We sometimes sing, “Those glories which eternal years shall never all unfold.” The glories linked with earthly dignitaries soon fades and is forgotten; His glory shall never grow dim.

A Response that is Practical

In verses 10-12, the moral implications of His greatness and grace are seen: obedience, devotion, submission, and adoration. Each of these themes deserve their own meditation. May we, however, not only worship Him, write of Him, but work for Him.

Look at the four Psalms linked with the Shoshannim or “Lilies:” Ps 45, 60, 69, 80.
