What a shock it must be to think you are safe and secure — only to find, suddenly, that you are shut out. It happens in this world. And Jesus warned that it will happen in eternity.
It all happened on a Wednesday. The United States Secretary of the Navy met with a large group of reporters in the morning. He spoke about future plans, ongoing challenges and what lies ahead for shipbuilding. Everything appeared normal, and there was no sign that anything was about to change.
But it had already changed.
That same day, a decision had been made at the highest level. The Navy Secretary received an abrupt message — resign or be dismissed immediately.
It seems he was blindsided by the message—totally shocked and in disbelief that things could end so quickly.
He began making calls. “Is this real? Is it over?” He reached out to people he knew. The answer came back:
“Yes. This decision came from the very top.”
Power and Influence
This was not a man on the outside looking through a window at power. He had wealth. A billionaire himself. He had influence. He had access. He had given large sums of money to see the President elected. His mansion was in West Palm Beach, too. He moved in the highest circles. He knew the right people. He had been in the room.
If anyone could have expected the decision to be reversed, it would have been him.
Surely this was a mistake.

Final Word
He travelled to the Eisenhower Executive Offices, searching for someone —anyone— who could confirm or overturn what he had been told.
Finally, he made his way to the West Wing and requested a meeting with the President himself. For over an hour he waited.
At last, he was brought in. Minutes later, he walked out—having heard it directly.
He was out.
If you were in his place, what would you be thinking?
“This can’t be right. Doesn’t he realize who I am? I have access. Surely, this can be fixed.” And yet, it wasn’t. It was final.
That moment—thinking you are in, only to discover you are out—is not just political. It is spiritual.
Warning from Jesus
Jesus warned that many will face that exact shock, but of a far greater magnitude.
Spiritually, there were people Jesus saw every day who thought they were in God’s inner circle and felt so secure in their religious practises. They practised their faith with rigid regularity and sincerity. They were not mere bystanders watching people practise their spirituality. Many of them were leaders in their religion — true insiders, they assumed.
“Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock … saying, ‘Lord, open to us.’ Then He will answer you, ‘I do not know where you come from… Depart from Me…”
Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’ But He will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from Me…!’ Luke 13:23-27
False Sense of Security
Jesus had a very pointed and sobering message for people who thought they belonged. These people had deceived themselves into thinking — “If anyone has got it made with God, it is me.”
The very people who think they are safe and secure because of their goodness, self-efforts, sincerity and their adherence to religion will be outside when the door is shut.
“…on that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name … and do many mighty works in Your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me…” Matthew 7:21-23
Jesus portrays people who practised their religion and did many impressive things, even using His Name in their efforts, but on that day, they will be shocked to be turned away.
Jesus does not say, “I once knew you.” He says, “I never knew you.”
Relationship – Not Religion
Jesus summed up the very essence of ‘eternal life’ in His prayer to His Father in John 17
This is eternal life, that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. John 17:3
Intellectual knowledge about Christ takes no one to Heaven. People study and learn about Jesus Christ. Many could even win a Trivia Contest answering questions about Him — but if they do not have a personal relationship with Him, if they do not know Him, they are still on the outside.

In shock and disbelief, people from that day will argue about their familiarity with Him and the times they rubbed shoulders with Him, but that wasn’t enough back then, nor is it enough today.
It’s not about proximity. It’s not about activity. It’s not about reputation.
It’s about relationship.
These were not careless people. They were not indifferent to spiritual things. They were active. Religious and involved. They really thought they were in.
But they were mistaken.

That is the danger of false assurance. You can be close to the truth —and still be outside. You can know about Christ—and still not know Him. You can be religious—and still be lost.
In this world, money can open doors. Influence can open doors. Connections can open doors.
But none of these can open the door to Heaven!
“…you were redeemed…not with silver or gold…but with the precious blood of Christ.” 1Peter 1:18-19
The Bible makes it clear how someone becomes part of the family of God.
But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:12-13
Not of blood – not in the family genes, or in the family upbringing or family traditions.
Not of the will of the Flesh – not in one’s own personal efforts – works, behaviour, spiritual practises or prayers.
Not of the Will of Man – not in rituals or rites of passage performed or granted by another.
But by receiving Christ —period.
What a shock it will be for many to discover—too late—that they were never truly “in.”

The door that is open today will one day be shut.
Jesus said: “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved.” John 10:9
Do you have a personal, precious, and precise moment when, as a sinner, you knowingly received Him (Jesus as your Saviour) and believed or rested on all His Name represents?
You don’t have to be on the outside. The door is still open—right now. But it will not remain open forever.
Why not receive Christ today? He is willing and waiting to welcome you.
