Many people imagine getting to Heaven is like climbing a ladder one rung at a time, bringing something to God that will ultimately please Him and make Him happy. Around the world, this concept of human thinking is pervasive and prevalent. Others think of it as a stairway to Heaven, and they must climb the steps.
Few world leaders publicly discuss their thoughts about the afterlife. So when President Donald Trump recently spoke about his desire to get to Heaven, it drew wide attention from both secular and religious media outlets.
No one, in their right mind, would want to be in any place other than Heaven after the curtain falls and they make their exit off the stage of time.
Like so many others, the 47th President of the United States of America, believes something that contradicts the Word of God — the Bible. The President is not the only one who thinks Heaven is a reward that one earns during their lifetime – but nothing could be further from the truth.
Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. (Ephesians 2:9 NLT)
He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. (Titus 3:5 NIV)
The Level Playing Field of Salvation
Sadly, millions believe that achieving Heaven is the ultimate prize — a goal that requires an arduous contest throughout life. But Heaven is not a DIY effort. It isn’t a pay-as-you-go scheme, nor is it based on one’s success in making self-improvements. Attaining Heaven isn’t based on some formula where good cancels bad or where sincerity and effort (either late-stage or long-term consistency) tip the scales in our favour.

Most are shocked as they read God’s Word and understand for the first time that no one can improve their chances of attaining Heaven. Everyone is on equal footing. It’s a level playing field for all — the notables and the notorious, the religious and the rebels. Outstanding citizens have no better chance of making it to Heaven than offending lawbreakers. Prime ministers, princes and presidents are no better positioned to gain Heaven than prisoners.
The Bible’s clear message is that we are all sinners, and without exception, we must be rescued — or we will perish in our sins away from God’s presence forever. Left to ourselves, we are hopelessly lost.
No one is righteous—not even one…For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. (Romans 3:10, 23 NLT)
The sole purpose of Christ coming to earth was because no one — absolutely no one — could ever qualify for Heaven based on their own merit. Without a Saviour, we would all perish in our sins for the eternal ages.
When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. (Romans 5:6 NLT)
President Trump’s Comments on Heaven

President Donald Trump made an impromptu call on a Tuesday morning to the Fox and Friends show. Among other things, he discussed the Russian-Ukrainian War and his desire to achieve a peace deal, but he didn’t stop there. He linked his efforts with his desire to get to Heaven. The President said:
“If I can save 7,000 people a week from being killed, I think that’s pretty— I want to try to get to Heaven if possible, I’m hearing that I’m not doing well. I am really at the bottom of the totem pole. But if I can get to Heaven, this will be one of the reasons.” [Source: People.com]
Some said the President was joking, but later in the day, the White House Press Secretary confirmed he wasn’t. Karoline Leavitt said:
“I think the President was serious. I think the President wants to get to Heaven — as I hope we all do in this room as well.”
The Ladder that Doesn’t Exist
When people think about getting to Heaven, they often picture it like climbing a ladder — hoping each good deed takes them one rung higher. Some even feel stuck at the bottom rung. But the reality is this: there is no ladder, and there are no rungs. There is only a cross.

The Message and Power of the Cross
Not everyone likes the message of the cross because it reminds us that our sins offend a Holy God, and for us to be forgiven, the penalty for our sins had to be borne by another. Many deny the seriousness of their sins. Too many feel that if they say a little prayer or do an offsetting good deed, they will be back in God’s good books. But the truth is sobering: our sins were the cause of Jesus’ death on the cross.
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (1 Corinthians 1:18 NIV)
A real Christian is someone who has personally come to the moment of realizing they are the unrighteous one in need of Christ’s righteousness.
For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God. (1 Peter 3:18 CSB)

The President, who will turn 80 in 2026, has said other things over the years that shed light on his thinking. In 2015, speaking at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa, he responded to a question about whether he had ever asked God for forgiveness. He said:
“I’m not sure I have ever asked God’s forgiveness. I don’t bring God into that picture.”
Upon further reflection, Mr. Trump added:
“When I go to church and when I drink my little wine and have my little cracker, I guess that is a form of forgiveness. I do that as often as I can because I feel cleansed. I say let’s go on and let’s make it right.” [Source: Christian Post]

There are many belief systems about God, but there is only one way to God and one way of forgiveness.
Jesus said: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6 NIV)
No one.

No Ladder — Just One Step
Bottom rung on the ladder? Friend, there is no ladder. There is only one step: a step of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
For while we were still helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly…But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8 CSB)

Forgiveness Through Christ Alone
Forgiveness of sins?
Through this Man Jesus there is forgiveness for your sins. Everyone who believes in Him is declared right with God… (Acts 13:38-39 NLT)
Call to Pray for Leaders
If you are a Christian, you remember the moment when, as a repentant sinner, you turned to Christ for eternal salvation. And it is our duty now to pray for others who have never experienced the beautiful gift of eternal life.
As a Christian, the Bible tells me I must pray for all who are in authority — regardless of their politics, beliefs, or behaviour. (1 Timothy 2:2)
Based on what President Trump has most recently said about his desire to get to Heaven, please pray that he will respond in repentance to the goodness of God and turn to Christ for salvation, if he has not already done so.

Equal Need — Equal Grace
But let’s remember: just as President Trump needs God’s grace, so did I, and so do you. We all stand equal before God in our absolute need of Christ.

If you are not a Christian, I hope this post confirms in your mind that a sinner is saved only by grace (unmerited favour) through faith in God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Human efforts, religious rituals, achievements, and accomplishments — nothing else contributes to one’s salvation and eternal life. Only faith in Christ will take you to Heaven.
An Invitation to You
For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift— not from works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9 CSB)
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16 NKJV)

Excellent comments…
Thrilling article. Thank you for putting the facts so plainly and clearly. Yes, it is indeed only a step! I took that step on October 21st 1951 at 19:20 during a gospel meeting! I was a girl of 11. I was so ashamed that I had `wasted my whole lifè! I was serious! I know that I shall be eternally grateful!
Amen brother,
Amen keep preaching the Word, God Bless
I too had read the article on Pres. Trump and have been praying for his salvation.
He has a number of true believers in his team and I trust they will have the opportunity to bring him the truth of the Gospel, as you have so ably explained in the above article. Peter. I wish there was some way this could be communicated to him directly. He definitely acknowledged that God had spared his life after that assassination attempt but has not acknowledged Jesus Christ, His Son thus far.
We’ll be look forward to hearing the testimonies of those who trusted Christ during the Lord’s Day worship meetings.
