The above sampling of verses from Exodus 22 more than demonstrates that God was not only interested in justice but in restitution as well. No one was to profit from sin. In fact, sin was to be a costly matter for the one who perpetrated it. The principle outlined here and reinforced in the trespass offering later in Leviticus is that restitution was always to be greater than what was originally taken or destroyed.

Leviticus and the details of the offerings also occurred in the shadow of Sinai, but the proximity of Exodus 22 to chapter 20 serves to reinforce that God was thinking of the ultimate restitution, the ultimate “restoring” of the effects of sin. We are, of course, reminded of Psalm 69:4, “Then I restored that which I took not away.”

God, Who alone knew the great and awful effects of sin in our world – sin that would be enhanced by the giving of the law that He had just given to Moses (Rom 5:13, 20), was thinking at that very moment of how His Son would not only put away sin but add “the fifth part” making not only life possible, but eternal life. Not only defeating Satan and His nefarious purpose but undoing the works of the devil. All that had been lost under the Headship of Adam was going to be restored and added to by the Last Adam. Now crowned with glory and honour, He will one day reign over a restored earth, bringing many sons to glory.

God did not entertain any “maybe” or possibility of failure. Before eternal times, God had foreordained this Lamb to be the One Who would bear away the sin of the world. The brief victory that Satan enjoyed would all be reversed by the Son on a cross.

Think of the “double payment” and the “fifth part” of Calvary: not Eden restored, but heaven opened to sinners to enter freely. Not only creatures of God’s munificent creation but sons in the family of God. Not only the availability of access to the tree of life, but the possessors of eternal life. Adam may have known the goodness of God in a garden tailored for his needs and pleasures, but we have known the heart of God. Not only have we received “double portions,” but God Himself has received the worship, willing, voluntary, and loving, from millions of redeemed souls. No wonder God was so interested in restitution when the law was given.
