Monday Meditations

The ultimate goal of redemption is to make us worshipers. The Lord Jesus Christ said: “…True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.” (John 4:23 ESV)

Worship, while difficult to define, is the result of being occupied with Christ – His person and work.

This weekly meditation is prepared by Dr. Sandy Higgins. Its purpose is to give believers truth to think about and develop in their own minds and hearts throughout the week. Ultimately, as the week progresses, daily worship will result in hearts full of adoration for the Lord Jesus on the Lord’s Day (Sunday) as believers gather to remember Him.

Dr. A.J. Higgins is the Editor of the Christian magazine, Truth and Tidings and is well known in many parts of the world for his relevant and clear Bible teaching. He lives in New Jersey with his wife Ruth.

NOTHING HELD BACK

“He that spared not His own Son”

Romans 8:32

The thought of “sparing” can carry several different connotations. It can mean to save someone from something. In 2 Peter 2:4 we read that God “spared not the angels.” It can also mean to mitigate or lessen what is required of someone. In Romans 11:21 God “spared not the natural branches.” He did not prevent them from the judgment they deserved because of His favor for the nation. Likewise, Paul warned the Ephesian elders of men who would not “spare the flock” (Acts 20:29).

How are we to understand “spared not” in this verse? In all these ways, God did not keep His Son from Calvary but delivered Him up. God did not hold anything back once Christ was upon the cross. All that sin deserved – the flood of righteous retribution and wrath from God – was poured out upon Him. There was no lessening, no sparing, and no fiat – “thus far and no further” from the throne of God. The line of the hymn comes to mind: “He spared not His Son. Tis this that silences each rising fear.”

Questions to Consider

1.  He “delivered Him up for us all.” The thought of “deliver” is to hand over. To what to God “hand Him over.”

2.  Why is the assurance of these verses so much more certain by the Spirit of God telling us that it was “His own Son” that God delivered for us?

3.  What does this verse suggest that God the Father endured when Christ was upon the cross?
