Often privileged people do their best to relate to those with far fewer privileges. When they shake hands and say: “I know exactly how you feel,” and then move on to the next person, there’s often a hollowness about their empathy. Some people resent their efforts to be relatable.

“What do you mean: he can relate to us?!! Not a chance. He grew up in luxury, surrounded by every imaginable benefit. He doesn’t have two sweet clues about life in the real world. His parents were filthy rich. He was pampered from the day he was born. Anything and everything he ever wanted just fell into his lap. He never endured the anxiety and pain of a job interview in his life. And now, the bubble he lives in becomes even more obvious.  He has a huge number of attendants who cater to his every need. Elite officers keep him safe. When his handlers try to package and present him as one living outside a bubble, they screen the people who want to visit him, to make sure they are favorable towards him. Don’t tell me he knows what real life is like here. When he tries to be empathetic its sickening. If anyone lives in a bubble, he does!”

Obviously, the person wasn’t referring to the Lord Jesus Christ!

When the Son of God came down to earth, He didn’t come as a spirit or a phantom; He took upon Himself human flesh. He was born in a farm stable, outside of normal comforts, to parents who were hard-working labourers. His family fled persecution and at a young age, He experienced refugee status.

Jesus grew up in a poor home in a poor village. He was acquainted with poverty. He knew what it was like to have siblings. If Joseph died while the family was still growing up, He would have shared in the tears of a heartbroken family.

At 30, when Jesus was alone in a wilderness for an extended period of time, He experienced a very direct attack from Satan and felt the pain of being confronted with those external temptations.

Although He only did good things every day, He was the most misunderstood person who ever lived on our planet. His truthful words and good deeds became the fodder to feed a growing whisper campaign against Him. He knew what it was to be wide awake while others slept peacefully through the night. He felt the hurt of family turning against Him.

During the COVID19 pandemic – the bubble life of isolation has taken on a new meaning for many of us. Living in the bubble means safety from the virus. Living in a bubble makes us less vulnerable with less exposure to threats and dangers.

The Lord Jesus didn’t live a bubble-life. If you are wondering if you can approach Him today in prayer with your circumstances – go right ahead. He will know what you are talking about. He is relatable. If He didn’t experience it directly Himself, He lived closely with others who did.

Your Great High Priest was here – not for a 3.3-minute fly-over or a 33-minute shake-your-hand stop, or a 33-day extended visit or even a 33-month tour of duty. He lived here, outside of a bubble for 33 years and experienced an environment that only went from bad to worse.

“…because He himself has suffered when tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.” Hebrews 2:18

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:15-16

Child of God, get alone with Him today. Pour it all out. Tell Him everything. Hold nothing back. Draw near to the throne of grace and you will receive mercy and you will find grace to help you through this time of need.

Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today,

Warmly in Christ
Peter Ramsay
