The command was given, and the entire military was mobilized, including the elite forces. A segment of a suppressed population in the country was making a mass exodus. Such open defiance of the country’s supreme leader would not be tolerated. The uprising would be halted and crushed at any cost and the people would be returned and subjected to closer monitoring, harsher slavery, and far graver penalties for even the slightest infractions.
The mighty Pharaoh of ancient Egypt had flexed his muscles. This rebellion of the Hebrew people would be a short-lived national embarrassment. They would be quickly brought back under control and the rebellion would be powerfully crushed.
This was no military parade. The strongest horses and the most experienced warring charioteers, riding the fastest and strongest two-wheel chariots, led the pack with the Pharaoh himself at the head. When the six hundred elite chariots were mobilized, everyone knew this was a national crisis – an extreme emergency. Their rugged chariot wheels were the best the engineers of the day could design and construct. The charioteers, with nerves of steel, had been trained for the fiercest combat under the most extreme conditions.
Immediately following the six hundred elite forces, were the reserves; in fact, Pharaoh conscripted all the chariots of Egypt. Defeat was not even a possibility. The unarmed Hebrew people would be overwhelmed and recaptured.
“So Pharaoh harnessed his chariot and called up his troops. He took with him 600 of Egypt’s best chariots, along with the rest of the chariots of Egypt, each with its commander…The Egyptians chased after them with all the forces in Pharaoh’s army-all his horses and chariots, his charioteers, and his troops. The Egyptians caught up with the people of Israel…” Exodus 14:6-7,9
And so, what is the rest of the story?
Can a personal question be interjected here before the story continues? Have you ever felt totally overwhelmed by the enemy’s display of force? Have you stared at the ceiling in your darkroom in the middle of the night, with tears wetting your pillow, as you feel totally swamped and crushed by the enemy’s brutal display of dark power?
“…the people of Israel looked up and panicked when they saw the Egyptians overtaking them.” Exodus 14:10
Are you panicking today – feeling your circumstances are totally hopeless?
But Moses said to the people, “Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the LORD which He will accomplish for you…The LORD will fight for you while you keep silent.” Exodus 14:13-14
Child of God, when the Lord’s timing arrived, there was no blocking or stopping what He intended to accomplish. It was not a 50:50 chance of success. After 400 years of brutal captivity and deep distress and longings of heart, God’s good time had arrived. Pharaoh’s power was wimpified, and ultimately, nullified.
As the mighty wheels of the chariots of Egypt began to swerve and drag and sink in the mud of the Red Sea, the charioteers knew exactly what was going on. They said:
Let us flee from before Israel, for the LORD fights for them against the Egyptians.” Exodus 14:25
Where are your eyes today as you read this? Are you looking at the enemy’s display of force? At your circumstances? At your own powerlessness to change the situation? Or, are your eyes fixed on the Lord as you wait in silence for Him to act in His own good timing?
Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today,
Warmly in Christ
