"I can't believe it. I heard her with my own two ears. I'm not dreaming. She looked me straight in the eyes and told me she never, not even once, went out with him. I thought I was her best friend and that she would always tell me the truth—no matter what. But I guess she let me down."
The truth is, anyone can let you down. Even in the closest and most trusted relationships, the possibility of a lie exists. Some people are awkward and clumsy liars. Their eyes, their body language, the tone of their voice, or the way they stumble over their words give them away. Others are smooth and polished and can lie to your face without blinking an eye. They could write a best-seller: “The Art of the Lie”
And lying is not limited to words. You don’t have to shape a lie into an audible sentence or type it into a written message. You can simply but sadly live a lie. We can lie with our lips, and we can lie with our lives.
When it comes to us and lying, anything is possible. But when it comes to God, lying is impossible.
Lying entered the human story in the Garden of Eden. Satan started the lie-ball rolling. In fact, the Lord Jesus said this about him:
… [Satan] has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44 NLT
Ever since Eden’s Garden, lying has stained the human family. Peter lied when he denied knowing Christ. Ananias and Sapphira lied to God over money and died a swift death. It was a sobering signal to the early church—God takes lying seriously.
Lying is completely contrary to the character of God. He is truth. Absolute truth. There is never a hint of deception, a trace of exaggeration, or the slightest shade of falsehood in Him. Jesus said, “I am… the truth” (John 14:6), and in prayer to His Father He said, “Your word is truth” (John 17:17).
Yes, God can move mountains and shake the earth. He can win battles without deploying an army. He can give life, and He can take life. He can create, and He can destroy. He can intervene in life’s circumstances in ways that leave us totally amazed. Jesus said, “With God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). In the context of power, deliverance, and salvation, all things are possible with God.
But when it comes to lying, there is one thing God will never do and can never do. Not because He lacks power, but because He cannot act inconsistently with His own character— or contrary to His own nature. He is truth, and therefore lying is impossible for Him.
It is impossible for God to lie. Hebrews 6:18
God never lies. Titus 1:2
Every word of God proves true. Proverbs 30:5
God is not man, that He should lie. Numbers 23:19
So what does that mean for us?
Perhaps lying is the issue facing you today. Maybe it’s time to stop covering, stop pretending, and tell the truth. “Putting away lying, ‘Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbour’” (Ephesians 4:25). God loves truth and delights in honesty.

But perhaps your struggle today is not dishonesty—it is doubt. God has said something in His Word, but for one reason or another, you cannot rest in it. You are in turmoil, plagued by fear, uncertainty, and questions. What are those four verses above telling you? God cannot lie. His Word is true. His promises are dependable.
To not trust or to not rest on what God has said is, in effect, to make Him a liar (1 John 5:10). But He cannot lie. Not once. Not ever.

What a comfort that is, because the God who cannot lie has promised eternal life through His Son. Salvation rests, not on the shifting feelings of a frail human, but on the unchanging truthfulness of God.
So, dear child of God, rest today on His Word. His Word is truth because He is truth. People may fail you. Friends may disappoint you. Promises made on earth may be broken. But God never speaks falsely, never misleads, never exaggerates, and never changes His mind about what He has promised.
Rest in Him. Believe Him. Take Him at His Word—and be at peace.
