KJV Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.”

NASB Psalms 19:14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.

There are many times, perhaps the majority of times, that we can be thankful that the words of our mouth are not in agreement with the thoughts of our hearts. Imagine the interpersonal chaos and calamity if we said what we are thinking to everyone. The ability to “disconnect” our thoughts from our words is not hypocrisy but Grace and wisdom. But what would it be like if the thoughts of our hearts and the words of our mouths were always, not only in concert with each other, but pleasing to God?

There was a unique Man Who moved here whose every word pleased God. Not only His words, but the thoughts of His heart were also perfect in every way. No word He ever spoke could be improved upon. He “knew how to speak a word in season to him that is weary” (Isa 50:4).

He knew what to say, to whom to say it, when to say it, and how it should be said! No mean accomplishment. Every word was not only truthful but absolutely fitting for the recipient and for their blessing. Even the rebukes were blessings unrecognized to bring to repentance and blessing. The words of Christ were pearls marked by grace and truth.

Perhaps even more remarkable than the words of His lips was the meditation of His heart. We have all learned that we can, most of the time, manage to control our tongues. But controlling our minds is another issue. The stray thoughts, the sudden impulses, the pride that rises up, the lust, the envy, and a host of other sinful things from a sinful nature that invade our minds plague us daily.

But this Man —not one thought, imagine that, not one single stray thought ever coursed through His holy mind. No proud thought ever invaded His humble character; no selfish motive, no envious desire, nothing tainted in the least by impurity was ever present in the meditations of His heart. Moment by moment, day by day, only that which brought pleasure and delight to His Father.

No day ever dawned when He asked in prayer for control of His thoughts. No evening prayer ever contained a confession of wrong thoughts. Each day was marked by fragrance that ascended from His heart and lips to delight and honour His Father.

While we may view Psalm 19:14 as a goal or the aspiration of our souls, for Him it was the norm. As we consider Him, it compels worship for the beauty of His person. He is the summation of all that is lovely. “His lips drop sweet-smelling myrrh” (S of S 5:13).
