I am not sure whether I am a baritone or a monotone singer. Sometimes, I think I can sing some flat tenor, but, for the most part, I’m in the fog-horn section of the choir squawking out the lyrics. Just this morning, I did an online tone-deafness test, and I was greatly relieved to have passed the test, but I won’t be framing the certificate any time soon.

I have never sung in a barbershop quartet or an all-male choir. I’m not the lead singer in a bluegrass gospel band or in a contemporary Christian group either — and I am not even a backup singer for any group, nor have I auditioned for such a thing. I know better. I have never made it to an annual Dove Award celebration for Christian artists. And in my wildest dreams, I don’t expect to be inducted into any hall of fame.

But what causes joyful heart palpitations is knowing I will attend a far more exhilarating event. And there’s not a chance I will miss it. My flight won’t be cancelled, nor will I come down with laryngitis. And I won’t be there as a listener or as a happy observer. I’ll be there as a singer with perfect pitch, hitting every note dead-on and never missing a beat. Yes, a full participant — totally engaged. It will be the largest gathering of singers ever held in the universe. We won’t be singing ‘Michael, Row your Boat Ashore, Hallelujah’ or ‘Kumbaya’ or ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.”

Check out this occasion referenced in Revelation Chapter 5:

Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honour and glory and blessing!” And I heard every creature in heaven and on Earth and under the Earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honour and glory and might forever and ever!” Revelation 5:11-13

Whether it is singing or chanting, I will be able to do both. If it’s the millions of angels’ turn to lead the chorus, I will still be there in total accord with their song: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain!”

As your mind is transported to future scenes of glory just now, don’t lose the sense of anticipatory awe, worship, and praise by quibbling over the finer points of eschatology. Instead, answer this question: Will you be singing or weeping on a future day? Will you join the Cosmic Hallelujah Chorus on a future day?

I’ll be there when the redeemed from every nation and family tree on Earth will point toward the throne. Unanimously, we will say or sing or chant: ‘TO HIM who sits on the throne and to the Lamb, be blessing, honour, glory and might forever and ever.’ It seems as if the universe will erupt in a burst of harmonious song to the Lamb — our Saviour and our Lord!

John wrote a little later, in Revelation 19, of another occasion:

I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, crying out, “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God… Revelation 19:1

There’ll be no frogs in our throats in a future day. Nor will we be croaking out wobbly notes. No one will be singing off-key or a half-note behind. We won’t just be mouthing the words with dull and drab countenances while our minds are thousands of kilometres away. No! We will be very present — totally engaged!

Too often, we go to a hymn sing, but we take along our heavy hearts— sometimes overwhelmingly heavy. Other Christians don’t understand. We try to sing, we do our best, and then we go home and face our family’s realities. In the unending days of our glorious future with our wonderful Lord, no burdens will ever weigh us down again.

In that day, there will be no anxious worries or throbbing emotional pains. We will be relieved of all our burdens and trials. Our mouths will be open wide, and our vocal cords will be perfectly tuned to sing praises to Him, who loved us and washed us from our sins. No teardrops to moisten our face. Instead, our faces will be beaming and our hearts pounding with the thrill of just being there and joining the chorus of praise – Worthy is the Lamb!

We will echo the doxology that John and probably many other Christians sang on Earth:

To Him who loves us and has [washed us] set us free from our sins by His blood, and made us a kingdom, priests to His God and Father—to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Revelation 1:5-6

I’ll be there singing with perfect pitch. No tone deafness then! Will you be there? For sure? Get it settled. Email or talk to someone if you are having doubts. This link might be helpful to you. Get it settled. Open God’s Word and be sure today.
