The origin of the phrase “live happily ever after” in literature is hard to pinpoint, but it remains a familiar expression in English today. A prominent New York lawyer recently celebrated a multi-billion-dollar legal victory online, concluding his announcement with: “And they all lived happily ever after….” However, this optimism was short-lived, as tragedy soon followed.

The Rise and Fall of Autonomy

More than two decades ago, a UK tech company led by Mike Lynch skyrocketed to fame. Under his leadership, Autonomy expanded aggressively through acquisitions. The rapidly rising and high-flying UK technology company attracted the attention of giant Hewlett-Packard (HP). Autonomy was soon swallowed up by a $10 billion dollar HP deal and merger in 2011.

However, Autonomy turned out to be not as hot a deal as HP initially thought. Multiple lawsuits ensued, and fierce legal battles were fought. Had Autonomy fraudulently inflated the value of the company, or did HP fail to exercise due diligence in negotiating the takeover?

Legal Battles and Acquittal

After years of legal wrangling, former CEO Mike Lynch was charged with fraudulently inflating the value of his company, and he was extradited to the United States in 2023. Lynch lived under house arrest during one of Silicon Valley’s most significant fraud trials. (1)

Representing Lynch in the federal criminal trial was respected American attorney Christopher Morvillo, a partner at  Clifford Chance.  After 13 years of fierce litigation, Mike Lynch and his colleague Stephen Chamberlin (Autonomy’s former VP of finance) were acquitted of all charges by the jury. The 12-week trial in San Francisco ended with a not-guilty verdict.

Following the victory, Attorney Morvillo celebrated by writing a 495-word LinkedIn post praising his team of lawyers and thanking his wife and family for their patience, love and support. Then he ended with: ‘And they all lived happily ever after.’  (2) Lynch, too, celebrated by taking his family and close associates, including Morvillo, on a Mediterranean cruise aboard the award-winning superyacht Bayesian owned by his wife, Angela Bacares. (3)

A Celebration Turns to Tragedy

With 22 people on board, the luxurious 56-metre yacht, boasting the world’s second-tallest sailing mast at 72 metres, sailed the Mediterranean off the coast of Italy. (4)

Tragically, the phrase “and they all lived happily ever after” was a very short-lived reality.  On August 19, 2024, in the early hours of the morning, a waterspout struck the yacht. Although the builder of the Bayesian said the yacht was built to withstand hurricanes and was “almost unsinkable (5), within 16 minutes, the superyacht lay on its side 50 meters below the water’s surface.

Tragically, 12 of the 22 onboard lost their lives —including Mike Lynch and his American attorney Christopher Morvillo.

In a further twist of fate, back home in the UK, Stephen Chamberlain, Lynch’s former colleague who had also been fully acquitted, had passed the six-mile mark in his morning run when he was struck by a car. He later died from the injuries in the early morning hours of August 20, the day after the yacht sank. (6)

Living happily ever after was very short-lived for some.

The Inescapable Reality of Death

As sobering as this story is, it reflects a broader reality: mortality touches everyone. According to World Population Review, 170 791 people will die today around the world. In the last hour alone, a staggering 7116 took their final breath.

While many die from prolonged illness, many others succumb to sudden tragedies. Based on the daily news we see,  many go out into eternity accidentally – a choking, a car accident, a drowning, a bullet wound, a fire, a fall, an overdose, a heart attack, an aneurysm, a workplace fatality, etc.

The list of what causes one to exit this life and enter the next is extensive and diverse. But the fact remains our mortality rate is 100%. The dream of living happily ever after is too often abruptly interrupted.

Death (personified as the “Grim Reaper”) does not discriminate. It knocks on the doors of the young and old, rich and poor alike, regardless of race, ethnicity or belief system. The Holy Bible provides deep insights into why death touches us all (Romans 5:12, 15, Romans 6:23), but that is not the focus here.

Are You Prepared for Eternity?

The real question is: are you ready for eternity? Are you prepared to meet God if today were your last day? Are you spiritually prepared to die if this were to be your last 24 hours of life?

A lack of Emergency Preparedness is considered negligence, yet how many are prepared for the most significant emergency of all — our own death?

A graphic design artist once tried to visually capture a few critical realities high-lighted in the Bible about life and death and destinies in Eternity. His sketch may not be perfect, but the basic visual message is crystal clear. As a reader, you are on the left side of the Death Column but on which road are you travelling?

roads to eternity
Jesus said the most popular road is Broadway, even though it takes people where they don’t want to go. Once travellers encounter death, they pass the point of no return. The way to Heaven could not be clearer or simpler. You exit Broadway by the one and only Door who is Jesus Christ. Unless you enter that Door, you will never make it to Heaven. When Jesus died on the Cross for your sins, He opened up the Narrow Way to Heaven. You enter that Door by accepting Christ as your own Saviour. If you miss Christ, you will miss Heaven.

The Bible warns: Prepare to meet your God. (Amos 4:12) Those who are spiritually prepared in this life to meet God are those who will live happily ever after beyond death. The Bible speaks of those whose sins have been forgiven and who have been made right with God as having “peace with God.” (Romans 5:1) No one has peace if their sins have never been forgiven — nor are they in good standing with God.

Peace with God Through Christ

The overarching message of the Bible is that you can have peace with God through personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Living happily ever after death is God’s desire for all. (2 Peter 3:9) God wants everyone to repent of their sins and trust Christ personally as their Saviour.

The Apostle Paul in the Bible was not always a Christian. (No one has always been a Christian!) By his own admission, he had been a blasphemer and an enemy of Jesus. He called himself the chief of sinners. (1 Timothy 1:15) But that all changed when he understood that Jesus was the Christ who died for his sins. His anti-Jesus rage evaporated, and his heart was filled with love for the very one he once despised.

Paul later wrote: “The Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20). He understood that “Christ died for our sins” (1 Corinthians 15:3), and he was included in that one word — our.

Living for Christ — A Glimpse of Happily Ever After

In another letter in the New Testament, Paul talks about his life now revolving around Christ. Below is an excerpt of his letter. As you read it, think about the words — living happily ever after.

For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better. But if I live, I can do more fruitful work for Christ. So I really don’t know which is better. I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me. But for your sakes, it is better that I continue to live. (Philippians 1:21-24 NLT)

As much as he would like to continue to be a blessing to others here on earth, the very thought of the afterlife and Heaven and being with the Saviour who loved him to death – was even better and more thrilling.

For Christians, their personal faith is in the Lord Jesus Christ, who died for their sins and was buried and raised from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).  He, Jesus Christ, is the anchor for their joyous optimism beyond death.

In the Bible verses below, feel the vibe of Paul’s sense of triumph as he thinks of the death of one who knows Christ as their Saviour:

O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? ” For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:55-57 NLT)

Prepare to Live Happily Ever After

Yes, death comes knocking on the door of Christians, too. But because every true Christian has a conscious and memorable moment when they personally trusted Christ as their Saviour, they are fully prepared to meet God and to live happily ever after.

Are you prepared?

There are many personal testimonies on heaven4sure.com of Christians who were prepared to die and who faced death peacefully with the joyful anticipation of being with Christ when they took their last breath. Here are just three links that may be of interest to you.
