KJV Luke 2:51 “He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them”

NASB Luke 2:51  “And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them …”

KJV 1 Corinthians 15:28 “Then shall the Son also Himself be subject …”

NASB 1 Corinthians 15:28 “Then the Son Himself also will be subjected … “

We gaze in wonder and worship as we see the Creator of the universe going to lowly despised Nazareth and submitting Himself to the headship of Joseph and the care of His mother, Mary. Here is the omnipotent placing Himself under the care of the weak and puny; the omniscient subjecting Himself to the peasant carpenter and his wife; the Eternal One, now the child of 12 years, ranking Himself below the creatures of His own hands.

The mysteries of His holy manhood are beyond our ability to understand. We have no standard or collective personal experiences against which to comprehend them. His willing, intelligent submission to His parents banishes forever any thought of inferiority or deficiency in the concept of headship and submission. In contrast, it lends to these a beauty and lustre that nothing else could possibly equal. Secular society may rail against the concept of submission, suggesting it is debasing and shameful. But He has elevated and given it an incomparable dignity and value.

But come now to 1 Corinthians 15 and hear those memorable words sounded out by Paul: “Then cometh the end” (v 24). The One Who “in the beginning” called worlds into being will now signal that the end has arrived. The foes of Israel and God have been vanquished, a 1000-year reign of Millennial bliss and blessing has expired, and Satan’s final attempt to unseat God and frustrate His purposes has been defeated. Even death has been slain and lie “dead.”

The end has arrived. All dominion and power, all authority honour, and all government will be concentrated in One Man – our Lord Jesus Christ. He has achieved the dream of every despot and dictator but with a totally different motive. He has achieved what every ruler has dreamed of but by different means. He rules over all people everywhere, but in a different manner than all who have gone before.

He holds worldwide dominion in His hands. What will He do with it? Will He hug it tightly to His breast, savouring His “right” to it all? Will He exploit it for His personal honour and gain? Will He exult in it and parade it before the eyes of all the universe?

We are told that He will deliver up the Kingdom to God, His Father, with the result that God will be all in all (1 Cor 15:24-28). The Son will be subject and own the Headship of the Father for all eternity! As a faithful Steward, He will hand back to His Father the kingdom that was entrusted to Him to administer. At the moment He returns the kingdom to His Father, the world will witness the end of all possible rebellion, sin, and sorrow. Eternity has dawned, and the long night is over!

The One Who came into this world and Who was marked by subjection as a child in a family will continue to display this very same grace as a Man eternally. He was subject in incarnation; He will be subject in eternal glory!

Consider:

What do you think it means that “God will be all in all”?
