“I can’t believe it. I heard her with my own two ears. I’m not dreaming. She looked me straight in the eyes and told me she never, not even once, went out with him. I figured I was her best friend and that she would always tell me the truth – no matter what. But I guess she let me down.”

The truth is – anyone could let you down. Even in the tightest and most trusted relationships, the possibility of a lie exists. Some are very awkward and clumsy liars. Their eyes and body movements give it away; the tone of their voice or the way they stammer-out their lie, are all dead give-a-ways! But others are smooth and can sweetly, with sugar, lie to your face without blinking an eye.

You don’t have to formulate a lie into an audible or written sentence. You can just live a lie. There’s no difference. We can lie with our lips and we can lie with our life. When it comes to us and lying – anything is possible. But when it comes to God – lying is His one impossibility.

Lying entered the stage of time in the Garden of Eden. Satan started the lie-ball rolling. In fact, Jesus called Satan ‘the father of lies’. (John 8:44) Christians live with the reality of sin and its effects until they exit this life. Peter lied when He denied knowing Christ. Ananias and Sapphira, early Christians in the Jerusalem church, lied to God over money and died a swift death. It was a strong signal to the early Christians – God takes lying seriously and it is a great offence to Him.

Lying is totally opposite to the character of God. He is Truth. Absolute truth. There is never even a hint of deception or a taint of exaggeration or a shade of falsehood in His Words.

Yes, God can move mountains and shake the earth. He can win battles without ever deploying an army. God can give life and He can take life. God can create and He can destroy. God can wonderfully intervene in life’s circumstances. Jesus said: “With God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26. In the context of power, deliverance and salvation all things are possible with God.

But when it comes to lying – the possibility of God doing the impossible is impossible. There is one thing God will never do and can not do because He is Truth. He will never lie.

“It is impossible for God to lie.” Hebrews 6:18

“God never lies.” Titus 1:2

“Every word of God proves true.” Proverbs 30:5

“God is not man that He should lie.” Numbers 23:19

Maybe lying is not the issue facing you today. Maybe it is. Perhaps it’s time for you to tell the truth or to stop living a lie. However, your issue today may be one of doubts. God has told you something in His Word but for one reason or another you can’t rest on it. You are in turmoil – plagued by fear and doubt. What do you think the four references above are telling you?

To not rest on what God has said is to suggest God is lying. (1John 5:10) Dear Child of God rest today on His Word. His Word is Truth. He is Truth. Rest, relax and enjoy.

Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.

Warmly in Christ
