Spittle on His Face
“Then did they spit in His face and buffeted Him; others smote Him.”
Matthew 26:67
Earlier, we are told of a face that did “shine as the sun” (Matthew 17:2). Isaiah spoke of a face before Whom winged seraphim veiled their faces. John will tell of a face before which the heavens and earth will flee. Yet men spat upon that face; men raised their fists and struck blow after blow upon that face. And He silently, majestically, stood and took all they gave!
Think of the shame! Think of the humiliation!
We think of omnipotence as the greatest power known. Yet the Lord’s self-control controlled His omnipotence! Not a word in retaliation; not an action in resistance. Like “water poured out” there was absolutely nothing in Him which resisted the actions which displayed the depth of our depravity.
He not only suffered for sinners, but He suffered from sinners. The spittle of men ran down His face, mingling perhaps with blood which came from His wounds. No word of sympathy, no voice of moderation, no hand to restrain the evil of men: yet He silently endured “all the shame men heaped upon Him.”
Questions to Consider
1. Did the Lord ever use saliva for anything? In His there was virtue; in theirs, there was vileness.
2. According to the Old Testament, who was to have his face spit upon? Did Boaz do this to the unwilling redeemer?
3. Why do you think spitting is an expression of utter contempt and reproach? What does it symbolize?

This weekly meditation is prepared by Dr. Sandy Higgins. Its purpose is to give believers truth to think about and develop in their own minds and hearts throughout the week. Ultimately, as the week progresses, daily worship will result in hearts full of adoration for the Lord Jesus on the Lord’s Day (Sunday) as believers gather to remember Him.
Print this off. Keep it nearby for the week. Jot down your thoughts and responses to each question. What other questions come to your mind as you meditate on this verse?
