It had been the worst Passover weekend ever. These two were heading home broken-hearted. There wasn’t even a hint of happiness or hope on their faces. The highly-touted silver-lining behind the darkest clouds was nothing more than a fable. Nothing good could ever come out of such a miscarriage of justice and tragedy.

For months, all their hopes were pinned on Jesus. The more they heard and saw, the more excited they became. He may well be the long-awaited Messiah – the Promised Deliverer! And then, all – (emphasis on ‘all’) their hopes were dashed.

Betrayed by one of His own disciples. Arrested. Condemned by the Sanhedrin and the High Priest. Interrogated by Governor Pilate and King Herod. Brutally beaten. Sentenced to death by crucifixion. Nailed to a cross, with no last-minute possibility of a dramatic escape. Dead and buried. Hope finally extinguished.

Then on Sunday, rumours circulated that His body was missing from the tomb. In fact, some were claiming angels had told them He was alive again. Was it a cruel hoax? Not wanting to get their hopes up again only to be bitterly disappointed, it seems they dismissed the latest rumours of Him being alive. Instead, they clung to their deep gloom and profound sadness.

They were so absorbed in their conversation, they failed to notice the gentleman who was now walking in-step with them. Finally, the Gentleman eased Himself into the conversation and a dialogue ensued. He listened attentively and sensitively to their expressions of sorrow, disappointment and anxiety. And then He began.

Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. Luke 24:27

At what point, during the 11.3-kilometer trip to their home in Emmaus, did He start explaining the Scriptures to them? It was an uphill walk, so it could have easily taken them two to three hours to get home. Even if they only had the privilege of listening to Him walk-through-the-Scriptures for 60 or 90 minutes – can you imagine how He warmed and stirred their hearts?

What might have been a collection of sacred writings to them before, now became a carefully designed (inspired) book that dove-tailed intricately together into a beautiful masterpiece – truly the Word of God. The common thread throughout all those writings was the beautiful person of Christ. Never before had the Scriptures made so much sense to them. Their hearts burned within them as they listened to Him.

Ultimately, He revealed Himself to them not just through the Scriptures, but personally at their kitchen table. Such an intimate experience with Christ will give the faintest believer energy to press on. These two people were so energized and enthused with the latest knowledge of Christ, they set-out on foot, re-walking the 11.3 kilometers to tell the other disciples.

As you read your Bible chapter after chapter, are you finding Christ? Are you consciously looking for Him in the Old Testament? Have you asked the Holy Spirit to reveal Christ to you as you read the sacred pages? Do you pray before you read, and as you read – asking to be taught by the Spirit of God Himself?

The more we see Christ in the Scriptures, the more intimate our relationship will become, as we grow in the “grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” 2Peter 3:18

The more ‘real’ our daily relationship with Christ becomes, the deeper our joy will be, the greater our power will be and the more energy we will have to press-on.

Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.

Warmly in Christ
