Someone would probably laugh or be annoyed if I claimed that my personal story is, from my own perspective, the #1 best story in the world.  But is it an empty claim? Not really. It’s not proud or arrogant to find greater joy and depth in your own story than in the story of another.

Of course, the focus here is not fender-bender stories or a long wait to buy a pretzel. Stories like that can easily be upstaged. We are talking about the life-changing, destiny-altering personal story of one’s conversion to God.    When it comes to the personal story of how a sinner, on the road to Hell, was wonderfully saved, by God’s matchless grace, through simple faith in the Lord Jesus Christ – well, there’s no better story to tell.

(570 BC) You can almost imagine the people rushing to their mailboxes after the BPSC (Babylonian Postal Service Courier) gallops off to the next driveway. An envelope from King Nebuchadnezzar’s Royal Palace!  Rarely do commoners get mail from a King. “Dear, what could it be? Is it an edict to put us all to death?”

Everyone in every country got a similar envelope – pagans, Jews, Baal worshippers, Babylonians and all others. As people began to read, their jaws would drop and their eyes would widen. This was the mightiest King in the world, a warrior, and a builder – such a prolific builder that his buildings and advancements are a treasure trove for archaeologists in 2017.

The opening line of his letter?

King Nebuchadnezzar to all peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you! It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has done for me. How great are his signs, how mighty his wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion endures from generation to generation … (Daniel 4:1-3)

He published the first Gospel tract in many languages and did a mass distribution of his personal dealings with God. You can read the first Gospel Tract in its entirety in Daniel Chapter 4. He tells the world how exalted he was in his godless pride and how God brought him down-off his pedestal. He was brought so low, his eyes were taken off himself and directed towards the Almighty God. What a transformation for a wicked King who worshipped other gods – to now be praising the true God!  He concludes his personal testimony with these beautiful words:

Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven…. Daniel 4:37

One of the signs that someone has truly been saved is their desire to tell others. They want to share the good news. They want others to know their Saviour too. Have you told your story lately? You are shy? Many of us are. Have you ever tried doing what Nebuchadnezzar did – put it in writing?

Did you know that handing someone your personal story is the easiest thing to do and rarely will it ever be refused! Never ask them if they would like to receive your tract or your story. Just say: “Oh, by the way, here’s my personal story.”  PERIOD. No need to say anything else. Often, they will say: “Really?” and take it. Very, very few will turn it down.

Let’s say 500 Christians write out their story and get it printed into tract-form. Each person manages to give out just five each week. In one year, 130,000 people will have had a Christian personally witness to them.

Sharing your personal story IS witnessing for Christ. It is our Christian responsibility. Nebuchadnezzar had the resources to have his story translated into multiple languages and to pay for a mass distribution. Don’t you think the Lord will understand if you start off in a much smaller way? But make sure you start.

Some think their story doesn’t qualify to be written. There’s no big wow factor, e.g. former terrorist turns to Christ; drug addict saved, etc. The wow factor shouldn’t be about us; the wow factor is Christ – so your story qualifies!

Take a stab at writing it out. Write it for an audience who knows nothing about the Bible or God’s wonderful salvation. You may be wise to omit parts of your story that would only be confusing to an un-churched person. Share your first draft with a friend who may be a Christian but who didn’t grow-up in a Christian home and who didn’t hear the Gospel preached since infancy. Ask them to identify words or phrases that someone in the community may not understand. Write your second draft. In 600 words or less, respond to the three points below – the three critical and essential features of every conversion story.

  • Describe your life before you trusted Christ;
  • Explain how you came to know Christ died for you personally;
  • Highlight what has changed since you accepted Christ.

If you are interested in having your own story printed professionally and in colour, you may want to check-out this link. Or take your story to a local print shop. Give them a sample tract so they will have an idea of how you expect your story to be formatted. You will be surprised how inexpensive this powerful witnessing tool really is. You may have to give up three prime-rib dinners at a Steakhouse to fund it – but remember, it’s an eternal investment.

Tell someone today about Christ. Either tell them verbally or share Christ in writing.

Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.

Warmly in Christ
