In the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea … it is I … Of a truth, Thou art the Son of God.  Matthew 14:25-32 KJV

And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea… it is I ...You are certainly God’s Son!  Matthew 25-32 NASB

Earth, sea, and sky: the Lord Jesus was the Creator of all this; as such, He was in control of all. Some scoff at miracles, as though by their very nature, they are impossible. Yet the Lord Jesus did not cancel the laws of nature, as the “law-maker” He was greater than the laws He made. He transcends the laws which He imbedded in His creation.

His words to the disciples – “It is I,” actually mean “I am.” They are the words found so often in John’s Gospel. As the Sovereign of the sea, He is worthy of their worship.

Questions to consider

  1. How many times is Christ worshiped in Matthew’s Gospel?
  2. Can you find other occasions in Matthew where He shows His control of earth and sky?
  3. Look for confessions to Christ in chapter 14-17 and notice from whom they come and why.
  4. All are familiar with the seven “I am” statements in John. But can you find seven other “I am” statements in John which do not have a descriptive with it (i.e. John 4:26; John 8:28 for starters).
