Formula for a Career Promotion

He was young, honest and smart. He built relationships easily and earned respect quickly. He was sensitive, helpful and modest – not a bit arrogant. He worked hard at every level and proved himself in every position he was given. He was dependable. And he loved His God.

None of his family was there to celebrate his promotion.

He was called to the Monarch’s throne room. “Sir Joseph, I have consulted my advisors and we are unanimous in our decision to give you the most senior post in our administration. You are next in command to myself.” And with that, the Pharaoh gave his signet ring to Joseph, gave him a prestigious uniform and then put the ceremonial gold chain around his neck. And it didn’t stop there. The Pharaoh’s chariots idled outside the palace prepared for the celebratory parade.

Out through the pillars emerges young God-loving Joseph. He takes his place in the chariot directly behind the Pharaoh. As the charicade passes by, on-lookers fall to their knees in a display of respect for the young newly-appointed official – Joseph!

God’s young man.

Although Joseph was working for Pharaoh, he was really working for God. Whether he was a slave in Potiphar’s house, an inmate/worker during his wrongful confinement or an on-call dream interpreter or the prime minister of Egypt – Joseph’s overarching goal was to honor God in every sphere of his life at any cost.

Whatever you do, work heartily,
as for the Lord and not for men
,
knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward.
You are serving the Lord Christ
.
Colossians 3:23-24

If you work the way a Christian should work you too will likely get promotions. Why? Because the Christian standard and work ethic is dependability and diligence.

God-pleasing Christians are at work on time; do their job thoroughly without whining; and are a pleasure to be around – even when things are rough. They are respectful and sensitive to the needs of their co-workers, always wanting to be a help. They are honest and pack as much into their hours as they possibly can. They work hard even when the supervisor is not around. They are peace-makers and work hard to resolve differences and forgive quickly.

They get the job done. They do their best not to use their paid monthly sick allowance as quickly as they earn it. They aren’t hung-over on Monday’s. They don’t loiter around the workplace with a coffee telling dirty jokes or yapping about the latest episode on the Reality channel. They aren’t always agitating for this or that.

In short, they are just the kind of employee every employer would want to have. They are likely candidates for a promotion. How do you score in this regard?

The ones who score the highest are those who see beyond their job and their manager and they see their Lord. Their life for the Lord is just that – for the Lord. It is fully integrated – not compartmentalized. The wonderful, God-fearing, loving and honest saint that they are on Sunday morning is just the way they are on the job. They see their job as being God’s will for their life at this point in time.  Therefore to please God is to do the best possible job. Beyond the performance measures of the workplace – they are working to satisfy the Lord’s standards.
